Lullaby Vintage Boutique

måndag 29 november 2010 § 0

Riera Baixa street in Barcelona is famous for its many vintage stores, one of them being Lullaby. It is filled with fashion from 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's and one of my top favorites in Barcelona.

The owners of the store are genuinely nice and more then happy to help costumer find that perfect bag or jacket. Prices are not as high as you would think, considering that you might find vintage Gucci and Chanel in the store.

On weekends they sometimes put cheap shoes for sale outside the store, so look out for bargains!

Once again, lovely store, lovely staff, lovely vintage!

Audrey Horne

Audrey Horne was a fictive character in the series Twin Peaks (1990-91), played by Shirley Fenn. Her short haircut combined with sensual figure is an amazing isnpiration for the 90's fashion. Above she was featured in an editorial in The Face 1990.

When the 90's became retro.

§ 0

After repeating trends of everything from the 20’s to the 80’s, the fashion world finally felt ready to take on the 90’s again. The last 4 years have gone through clubkids style, grunge, minimal, 90210 and Twin Peaks influences; even the techno/rave style can sometimes be seen in some rare cases. But how did it all start?

When speaking of fashion in the 90’s it is not only about one mainstream trend, but an explosion of influences from the rebellious eighties. To briefly sum it up the influences emerged from upcoming youth subcultures in terms of both music and social class. Genres like rock, pop, hip hop and electronica are mixed and matched and spread through out one powerful media who later gave name to this very youth: ”The MTV generation”.

The 90‘s was more about the attitude, then the actual way of dressing. As seen in all decades of fashion, the previous decade opposites the next one, and vice versa. Grunge as a music genre could be said to emerge from punk, indie rock and heavy metal, walking away from a consumer society and away from those perfect smiles of Beverly Hills 90210.

The grunge scene started in the U.S. due to the fact of a large amount of upcoming ”grunge” bands from the north westcoast, mostly Seattle. Icons like Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam, who’s fashion strived to be as non-consuming as possible, ended up having the entire world buying flannel shirts, Dr Martin boots and dress in layers in order to stand a night sleeping ”under the muddy banks of the wishka”.

After the revolution of acid house in the late eighties, club- and rave-culture became massive. Great Britain mad a huge influence on the world of fashion through key magazines like The Face and i-D. In the early 90’s big outdoor raves became hughly popular with names like Fantazia or Sunrise. At the same time the club culture exploded and it was the beginning of the super club era with names like Ministry of Sound and Cream. Young english designers like John Richmond and Michiko Koshino embraced the principals of ”do it yourself” and got famous for their designs.

The androginity of the 90’s can be seen both in club culture and in grunge, where the skinny heroine chic look was crucial. Photographer Corinne Day discovered a young Kate Moss who turned out to be the actual face of the 90’s; slim, ”unperfect” and rebellious. This was a huge contrast to the american way of raising super models to the sky like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer and Helena Christensen. Kate Moss would however join that group, adding a new image to the world of beauty.

In the United States the 90210 look competed with other alternative styles, but a common thing in contrast to the depressive grunge style was the fresh healthy look as a spring off from the fitness movement from the 80’s, which can be seen in bicycle shorts, levi’s 501, bellyshirts and non fitted jeans.

Side by side with this look a major sporty influence could be seen. Brands like Nike, Adidas, Fila, Champion, Fruit of the Loom and Kappa got a huge appearance on the market. It was common to mix sporty with dressed up, such as long skirts with sneakers or hoodies with high heels. This particular style could later be found in the gangs of L.A and New York, where youth gangs created styles of 80’s fashion mixed with loose fit trousers from the hip hop movement, huge golden earrings and t-shirts showing the belly together with bulky sneakers, sometimes with high heels in rubber. Excessive make up was not an exception.

The RnB and Hip Hop movement was another influence on the 90’s fashion. Groups like Bell Biv Devoe (formerly New Edition), SWV, Color Me Badd, TLC and Neneh Cherry were just some to mention. After the original old school hip hop a new, fresh trend emerged in hip hop with groups like Arrested Development, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, moving away from the gold loving gangster style to a more down-to-earth expression.

The next post I will dedicate to a true 90's icon: Sherilyn Fenn a.k.a. Audrey Horn from Twin Peaks.

Humana

§ 0

Im a sucker for clothes. I try to be ethic and not buy to much newly produced items but sometimes it’s unevitable. Anyways. When you have serious issues with wearing the same thing twice (stupid huh?)it’s nice to at least feel you bought something some one else already used.

And no it’s not disgusting or gross, normally all vintage and second hand stores wash the clothes before selling them in the stores. And if not, my dry cleaner is always happy to give them a go.

I have discount cards at Humana. Like. Hello. If these pieces would have costed 100 eur each they’d call me a shopaholic. Now I’m just a clothes junkie. For every purchase of 10 eur you get a stamp and with 10 stamps you get something for 10 eur. Yeay.

But, if you want to find cheap bargains within the city center I would not hesitate going to Humana. They have 10 stores all over Barcelona where they accept clothes of all price ranges, meaning that you can find all kinds of stuff. The organization don’t buy garements, but everything is based on donation.

Which is good, because sometimes they just don’t seem to see the potential as I do. This is one thing, you have to be pacient when searching, and go often. That sculptured shoulder dress is hiding somewhere, as well as that perfect jumpsuit or those platform heels. You may find bargains for 10 eur which would cost 90 eur in a smaller vintage store, or 180 eur in a first hand store.

Depending on what you are looking for, it’s always good to have a clear idea in mind when entering these kind of stores. Perhaps you are looking for a camel or beige cape this season, but aren’t very keen to buy that one from Zara since EVERYONE will wear it. And Chloé is just not fitted to your budget. What to do?

Think of the fact that these trends are imitating previous trends in the history, just as these camel color cards we can see for this season. The whole tendency with capes, long straight legged trousers and leather details can be traced back to the 70’s (or other decades that the 70‘s was re-imitating for that matter).

I bet there’s a whole bunch of elder ladies in the Barcelona area who have been happy to get rid of their old ”rags”, and it is in places like Humana where you should look for them. Places where you least expect it.

And when I said that Humana doesn’t see the potential in the garments, that’s not totally right. All markets follows trends, wether it’s on a Burberry or Els Encants level. It’s not a coincidence that you can see wool camel coats all over passeig de gracia, but they are also to be found on the second hand market, racked up, ready to be sold to you for 18 eur only. Just like Zara have their top ten ranking products on tables and racks in the entry, Humana makes an effort of visual merchandising. Dry cleaning doesn’t cost a fortune, and you will be on the spot and adding an individual touch to your wardrobe.

The expression "thinking out of the box" certainly has to be addapted here. Perhaps you are looking for the perfect party dress but don’t want to bee seen with it twice? Snap over to the closes second hand store, go through the evening gowns (yes: the long ones) and cut it short! Everyone has thread and needles at home...no?

I have millions of dresses like that at home. Sometimes I think about selling them, but then again I kind of ”made them mine”. That’s the beauty of second hand clothing, it’s tailored and customized just for you if you let it.

Next time passing by a Humana store, don’t be disgusted by clothes others have worn, go in and be inspired! After all, when buying a new garment, you have no idea how many hands it has passed through, how many under paid workers in third world countries have cut, sown, packed and shipped it all the way to your shopping district for you to feel you’re wearing something ”new”.

Just a little thought next time you go shopping, wether it’s first or second hand.

Els Encants

tisdag 2 november 2010 § 0

La fira de Bellcaire or Encant Vells (Les Encants) as it also is called is one of the oldest market places in Europe, going back to the XVI century.

If you haven't been here and love shopping second hand you have seriously MISSED OUT on something. A huge marketplace filled with both old and new items at incredible cheap prices! You can find anything from 40's vintage hats to super bargains like shirts for 1 euro.

It is highly recommended to not bring any expensive gear here since there's quite a high rate of stolen goods sold on spot, and always extremely crowded. And don't be afraid of pushing around because otherwise you will never get through :)

Try to remember where you find the good things cause the stands are usually always in the same places. In the center of the market there's normally piles of clothes, shoes and bags to very low prices and in the corners there's more vintage clothing. The isles hold a lot of accessories but also cheap fur and leather coats for the ones interested.

Never under estimate the stands with new products either. They might not be second hand, but some garments and shoes might seem extremely fashionable to you but not to the old ladies normally shopping there. And it's cheap!
